Manchester United retains status as world's richest club

The Red Devils have once again topped the Forbes list and is now valued at more than $2 billion, although Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are catching up quickly.

Manchester United has retained its status as the world’s richest club, with its value having soared by an estimated 20 percent, according to business publication Forbes.
United is now reportedly worth $2.24 billion after posting record figures following its run to last season’s Champions League Final.
Real Madrid is second with a turnover of $1.88 billion, a 29-percent rise, while reigning European and Spanish champion Barcelona is third on $1.31 billion, an increase of 34 percent.
In total five soccer teams are now estimated to be worth over $1 billion, with Bayern Munich and Arsenal making up the top five. And Forbes predicts that the nature of the Champions League competition will mean the rich continue to get richer.
Manchester United is worth more than $192 million more than the New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys.

Tottenham star Gareth Bale is interested in a move to Barcelona, his teammate Sandro has declared.
The Wales international has been linked with a new challenge in the summer as Spurs are reportedly open to the idea of selling their prized assets if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Earlier on Tuesday, Barcelona right back Daniel Alves revealed his admiration for Bale, who moved to White Hart Lane in 2007.
Sandro then admitted that he would also like to ply his trade with the Blaugrana.
"I will work hard to play at Barca some day, because they are the best club in the world," the Brazilian added.

McManaman: Mourinho will not be satisfied until Madrid has won the Champions League

La Liga giants face Bayern Munich on Tuesday night in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal tie at the Allianz Arena with the victor facing either Chelsea or Barcelona.

Former Real Madrid star Steve McManaman says Jose Mourinho will not be satisfied until his side have won the Champions League and believes his old club will have to topple rivals Barcelona to do so this season.

Mourinho’s side faces Bayern Munich on Tuesday at the Allianz Arena, the venue for the final, in the first leg of their mouthwatering semifinal against the German side.

McManaman, who won two Champions League titles in four years at the Bernabeu, believes the supporters will not be satisfied this season unless Real Madrid conquers Europe - even though the club sits top of La Liga.

"The minute you walk through the door, it’s made clear you have to win the Champions League, you have to win everything," McManaman told Goal.com.

"This team now needs to get past a very strong Bayern Munich team and then beat Barcelona to make their own history.

"I don’t think anyone, including Jose Mourinho, will be satisfied until they have won the Champions League.

"People say things about his negative tactics but at the end of the day the people in Madrid want to win trophies. Style is important but it’s still secondary.

"When you’re coming second to Barcelona in everything, you have to ask yourself what your looking for."

With all eyes on an 'El Clasico' final next month, McManaman believes the current side are ready to challenge Barcelona and believes they will clinch the title in Spain, where they sit four points clear of the Catalans ahead of their trip to the Camp Nou on Saturday night.

McManaman added: "I watch Real Madrid most weeks and I really like look of the team this season. It’s the closest they have been to Barcelona for a few years and I think they will win La Liga.

"Who knows about the Champions League? The problem, if they get to the final, is obviously going to be having to beat Barcelona.

"When the season started, Barcelona would have been everyone’s favourite to win the Champions League but I saw Real Madrid as stand-out second favourites. They will give it a proper fight, I’m sure of that.

"Mourinho’s track record is amazing and he knows how to get through in semi-finals and finals.

"He’s done it with Porto, Chelsea, Inter and now Madrid. He’s won everything and he was probably seen as the only man who could topple Barcelona.

"The first season was a good start, winning the Copa del Rey, but this season was always going to be the big one and it’s going well so far."
