The Switzerland coach thinks the defender can come out aces if he stays close to CR7, however, he feels the Bavarians have one key advantage in their historical record vs Real.
Ottmar Hitzfeld has pinpointed the matchup between Cristiano Ronaldo and Philipp Lahm as the key battle to watch as Bayern Munich hosts Real Madrid in Tuesday's Champions League semifinals first leg clash.
The 63-year-old has emphasized that his former team will have to be concerned with the Portuguese winger, but feels that Lahm's recent switch from left to right back will see a formidable adversary face off against Ronaldo.
"In my view, the Bayern attack is as strong as that of Real - despite Cristiano Ronaldo. And against him, Philipp Lahm can now prove himself after he changed sides. At right back he is more defensive," Hitzfeld told Abendzeitung.
"[Lahm] needs to confront and bother Ronaldo before he receives the ball, because when [Ronaldo] picks up his pace and dribbles, he is hard to stop."
However, Hitzfeld feels that Bayern will come out on top, with its historical record of 10 wins and two draws from 18 matches with Los Blancos a key factor.
"Bayern have a decisive advantage," he said. "Bayern do well against Real, that they know. And above all, the Spaniards know that the statistics of the recent matches speak for themselves."
"This can paralyze players. Real have a lot of respect. Real in the semifinals are easier for Bayern than Barcelona."
